Our Keto Journey

Keto Day 1: New Year, New Journey

January 01, 2018

Happy 2018! We hope you had a great 2017, and are ready for a fresh start in the new year! We haven’t been on here in awhile, but we decided to give it another go, and modify the website a bit. We are also going to be starting the ketogenic diet this year, and want to share our experience with you.t's this item about? What makes it interesting? Write a catchy description to grab your audience's attention...

Keto Day 2: Restless Sleep and Electrolytes

January 02, 2018

We both did not sleep well. Restless sleep with going to the bathroom a lot. In the morning, we both had a slightly rapid and harder heartbeat than normal. This is part of transitioning into ketosis and is due to electrolyte and fluid loss as your body goes to burning fat instead of glucose for energy. We had our usual tea/coffee blend, with some electrolytes and water with a pinch of himalayan sea salt first thing in the morning. Within about 30 minutes we both felt normal again.

Keto Day 3: More Energy

January 03, 2018

We both slept well last night! Some waking up to pee again, but much better sleep and woke up feeling refreshed and energized. We started the day with the usual coffee/tea mix, along with our supplements. We had a lazy morning of reading and relaxing. Typically, when we sit and read for more than 30 minutes we both get tired and want a nap. However, neither of us felt that way today, which is hopefully a good sign that keto is working for us.

Keto Week 1: Reflections

January 07, 2018

Now that we have been following the Keto diet for a week, here are some of the changes and challenges we have experienced.

We both woke up feeling fine for work Thursday morning and were powering through the work day with a surprising amount of smooth energy. Unfortunately, Lindsay started to feel very bad after eating a large lunch. She got nauseous, clammy, rapid heartbeat, and proceeded to lose her lunch. After about an hour after her stomach settled, she then had a bone broth, and slowly started to feel better for the rest of the day.

Keto Week 2: Why I'm Trying Keto

January 13, 2018

Reflecting on my second week of a full Keto diet, so many people have asked me why I’m even trying this diet. They say that it is just another fad diet and as long as you eat in moderation, you’ll live a happy and healthy life.

I used to believe in the moderation diet. That is the diet I have lived by pretty much my whole life. However, I have also been sick most of my life with digestive issues. Beginning as a child, I have shown sensitivity to not only what foods I eat, but also how often I eat.

Keto Week 3: Keto for Women

January 21, 2018

So, somewhere in my third week of Keto, I got my period and experienced some of the worst cramps I have ever had in my life. It was awful. I could hardly walk at the end of the day and crawled to our bathroom to take the hottest Epsom salt bath with lavender oil I could stand. I think I stayed in the bath for an hour before I crawled into bed that night. It was terrible!

Keto Week 4: Back to Heavy Lifting

January 28, 2018

I have to say, this Keto thing isn’t so tough after all! Just to recap briefly, we started a strict Ketogenic diet on January 1, 2018. We are doing this diet for the myriad of health benefits it offers, many of which are just now being verified by traditional American medicine and medical research. Health benefits include stable energy throughout the day, no blood sugar swings, clarity of thought, better functioning of the metabolism, a calmer stomach, increased longevity, anti-cancer, and endurance performance boosts.

Food Planning: Friend or Foe?

February 03, 2018

Now that we have successfully completed the Keto diet for a full month, I do want to stress the importance of meal planning. For our first month of Keto, we wanted to carefully track our diet and have cooked all of our meals at home to ensure that we are eating the best whole and organic foods as possible, while sticking to our diet plan closely. We have yet to eat out at a restaurant, and have not purchase any ready-made meals or pre-packaged foods. Each meal this month has been whole foods cooked from scratch. It’s a good thing I love to cook!

Overcoming a Lifetime of Digestive Issues

March 02, 2018

I was recently accused of being evangelical about my new Keto diet/lifestyle. Not a fan of that word or the implied analogy, I was gravely hurt by this comment and thought more about my behavior in regards to my Keto transition. Maybe I had been too enthusiastic, talking too much about it, championing its benefits, and encouraging everyone I know to try it. I have to remind myself that even though my life has improved so much from this diet, it is not the panacea for all. All I can do is share my story to those who are interested or curious about the Keto diet. Here is my start.

My Journey To Heal My Gut

June 10, 2018

For as long as I can remember, my life has been ruled by my stomach. Riddled with a constant stream of major stomach and digestive problems beginning as a child, I’ve had issues keeping down my food, and finding foods that wouldn’t send me running to the toilet. By evening, I often couldn’t pull my pants up over my swollen belly, or even stand up straight. I would crawl to my bedroom and try to sleep the pain away. I took numerous trips to the doctor, all in vain.  I was told I was everything from lactose-intolerant to suffering from IBS or IBD, maybe Crohn’s disease, or maybe just an emotional stomach. Every kid loves to hear that. All the pain you are experiencing is just in your head. Over the years, I tried so many different diets to no avail. I tried dairy-free for years, the FODMAPs diet strict to the guidelines, the AIP diet, as well as vegan in which I was so low energy, all I did was sleep and nap. Not the answer, especially during grad school.

My Cycle on Keto: Why I Need Carb-Ups

July 02, 2018

One of the lessons I learned the hard way transitioning to the ketogenic diet was listening to my body's needs as a woman. You may have read in one of my past posts, but somewhere in my third week of Keto, I got my period and experienced some of the worst cramps I have ever had in my life. It was awful. I could hardly walk at the end of the day and crawled to our bathroom to take the hottest Epsom salt bath with lavender oil I could stand.
