Companies for the Modern Man

Companies the Modern Man Can Be Proud Of

With this post, I would like to highlight some companies and nonprofits that are doing amazing work to improve the world, as well as offering great products to consumers. I believe that part of being a Millennial is being a responsible consumer. One way to do that is to shop from ethical companies. Human rights violations and working conditions are notoriously bad when it comes to the clothing industry. We are going to change that. Today, we would like to highlight some of the companies we are an affiliate partner with, as we believe in their missions to make the world a better place.

Below are the companies we are putting in the spotlight today:

1. Krochet Kids Intl.

This nonprofit makes beautiful women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing and accessories.

The company was founded by Travis, Stewart, and Kohl after they realized the power of paying people in developing nations a living wage can have on their lives and that of their families’ lives. Their products are now made in Uganda and Peru. They are empowering women in these countries with the assets, skills, and knowledge to get themselves out of poverty. Their goal is long lasting, sustainable, and positive change in these women’s lives. Every product they make is hand signed by the person who made it. You can even visit their profile and learn their story! Some of the indicators that have improved for the women participating in the program are a steady income, savings increases, healthier families, physical abuse decreases, gender equality increases, and more children in school. These are just a handful of indicators Krochet Kids measures to make sure they are bringing about positive change in the world.

2. Nisolo

This company offers women’s and men’s shoes, accessories, and bags.

Nisolo’s vision is, “To return fashion to what it once was: about people, art, and valuing the creator just as much as the customer.”

There are three key concepts to Nisolo, as found on their website:

1. Intentionally Designed

”We believe in effortless style and versatile design that complement your lifestyle.”

2. Ethically Made

”All Nisolo producers are offered beyond fair trade wages, benefits, and a healthy working environment.”

3. Fairly Priced

”We sell directly to you. No middlemen needed, so you receive high quality at a fair price.”

Nisolo was founded in 2011 by Patrick and Zoe. Patrick took a development job in Trujillo, Peru, where he realized that the greatest challenge for local shoemakers was to bring their product to a global market. Thus the idea was born for a fashion label that was committed both to ethical practices and the wellbeing of its producers. Zoe brought her fashion industry experience to the table and Nisolo was born.

3. Alternative

Alternative Apparel is a clothing company that makes Men’s and Women’s clothing and accessories.

Alternative Apparel was founded by Greg Alterman in 1995, when he set out on a mission to make the perfect t-shirt in a socially responsible way.

The core philosophies of Alternative are sustainability and fair and safe workplace conditions. The company uses mostly sustainable materials and processes, eco and organic fabrics, non-toxic dyes, recycled materials and more. They have a presence in the USA, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Peru, Egypt, China, Thailand, and India. They work with factories that are in accordance with the Fair Labor Association Workplace Code of Conduct, and many of their factories are independently certified. Alternative is also a certified Green Business, a designation given by the City of Los Angeles.
