Mortality

Mortality: this is at the heart of what it means to be human. We have limited time available to us, and we must choose what we do with that time. One way to extend and improve our time on this planet is through exercise and a healthy diet.

I know it is extraordinarily difficult to stay on top of this. Society is setup to make us fail. After we leave school and start a real job, we are glued to a desk. We spend all day sitting in a chair, staring at a computer, and then by the time we get home, we are so exhausted from doing nothing that exercise is an insurmountable task. We just want to pop something in the microwave, eat it 5 minutes later, and watch Netflix with a beer in hand until we pass out. I will admit, this is great for the soul, but wreaks havoc on the girth of your stomach. So, what is one to do?

I am attempting to beat society at this game of survival, and I will share with you some of the things I do. First, I try to start off with a quick workout first thing in the morning. This could be walking the dogs around the block, doing a quick jog around the block, a short body weight circuit of burpees and air squats, or even a full-on workout.

I then make a healthy breakfast of either eggs, bacon, tomato and mushrooms or oatmeal loaded with berries and walnuts. We alternate these meals each day. And yes, some bacon in the morning coupled with a workout is very healthy for you.

I snack on nuts, protein, smoked oysters/sardines, and epic broths and bars throughout the day to keep me fueled. At lunchtime, I use my break to do a heavy weight training session of 5x5, either squat, deadlift, or press. I really need this reset in the middle of the day to power through the afternoon without passing out. This workout is the best means of energizing me for the rest of the day!

After I get back home, I try to do a 30 minutes or less kettlebell routine, which I have written on previously (refer to post: "Getting Fit!"). We will then cook dinner together, salmon and asparagus tonight, and then kick back for the evening. I also like to do 15 minutes of stretching while we watch Netflix or before reading in bed.

That is it in a nutshell. The key takeaways are:

  • Do something first thing in the morning to start your day on the right foot

  • Eat healthy, small portions and often

  • Get in some vigorous movement at lunchtime

  • Do something in the evening to keep things fresh

Make sure to have relaxation time in your day after a long time spent sitting in your office.

Kind Regards,

Nic
